Overview of Topic

Value Stream Mapping is a unique tool that shows the linkage between the information flow and the material flow.  It requires documenting all actions, value added and non-value added, currently required to take a product from raw material to the customer.

A current state and future state map is generated for each value stream.  The current state map provides a tally of non-value added steps, lead-time, distance traveled, and amounts of inventory along the process.  The takt time, or the amount of elapsed time a product must be produced to meet customer demand is calculated and then compared with the current state map.  A future state map is then developed to ensure that all process cycle times lie beneath the takt time and continuous flow processing is implemented wherever possible.
