A Discussion of Six Sigma Service Experiential Learning
Opportunities in the Department of Industrial Engineering &
Management Systems at the University of Central Florida
The
Department of Industrial Engineering and Management Systems at
the
University
of
Central Florida
provides a Six Sigma service experiential learning opportunity
for its students.
Dr. Sandy Furterer teaches a graduate-level Total Quality
Improvement course that covers the Six Sigma principles, DMAIC
problem solving approach and tools, and provides real-world Six
Sigma projects.
Dr. Furterer and her students will provide an update on
last year’s ASQ Section 1509 presentation and discuss how the
students improved the discipline process at University High
School, how they developed an infrastructure for
cross-functional problem solving at UCF, and how they designed a
framework for centralizing computer support for the College of
Engineering and Computer Science.
Dr. Furterer has been the Master Black Belt, and the
Harrington Institute, Inc. has provided Black Belt and Green
Belt certifications for the students.
They have already certified 16 Black Belts, and 29 Green
Belts in 2004/2005.
There are currently 46 potential Green Belt
certifications, and another Black Belt to be certified this
semester.
There will soon be over 92 certifications through this
program, with 17 Black Belts and 75 Six Sigma Green Belts.
